NUTRITION COUNSELLING

Nourishment can be a pathway to reclaiming an organic rhythm to life as a whole and to deeper self-knowing.

I specialize in helping clients explore more peace in their relationship with food and their body and alignment with health values. The word “health” originates from a root meaning “wholeness,” and indeed nutrition is ripe for accessing greater sense of wholeness. My approach considers overall well-being and honors individuals’ unique embodied experiences.

Our work might include: countering diet narratives, learning elements of intuitive eating, building self compassion, utilizing mindfulness practices, unpacking Health At Every Size (HAES) principles, clarifying your personal health values, developing body trust, and acknowledging colonialism and weight stigma in health-culture. HAES is a non-diet, non-weight-based framework by the Association for Size Diversity and Health that emphasizes inclusivity, respect, access to health resources, social justice, body diversity, individual choice, and critical consideration of scientific evidence.

Much of the process happens through me being a story listener - to understand and respect the circumstances of how your patterns and thoughts evolved, and to explore the many potential influences (social, physical, mental). I steer away from a strictly prescriptive approach, to foster your own competence by honoring health as a dynamic and personal growth process. This redirects thought processes from self judgment and criticism (which stifle change) to flexibility and curiosity (where positive changes can happen). After all, wellness is a practice in subtlety, but not precision.

Note: While weight and body may often be part of our discussions in the spirit of discovery, learning and healing, please understand that I do NOT provide weight-loss focused counseling as that approach is not supported by scientific literature and is antithetical to wellness, behavior change, and social justice. I do support health behaviors to care for your whole self.

The way we live in our bodies tells a story — what we’ve been told by others, experiences we’ve lived, what we believe about the world and our place in it. Our embodiment may be our most comprehensive autobiography …the living breathing story of who you are.

WHAT TO EXPECT

1
Inquire

If you’re interested in working together, fill out the contact form. I will review your inquiry (or we might hop on a brief phone call) to identify if I could be a good fit for your health & healing goals. You will need to need an active Primary Care Physician in place before we meet. I’ll provide a link to complete necessary forms.

2
Schedule

We’ll schedule an initial appointment (via telehealth). Often individuals feel hesitant about this first session: what will happen? what do I say? It’s a chance for us to meet, for you to share some of your story with me (however much you initially feel comfortable sharing), and to ask any questions you may have.

3
Starting Out

If we move forward, we will spend the first few sessions getting to know each other, ensuring I’m an appropriate guide to help with your goals. This assessment process over the first 2-4 sessions is not a guarantee that we will work together. I may refer you to a different type course of care than I can provide, and/or recommend additional providers or supports.

4
Support

Out of respect for your goals, I ask that we plan to meet weekly for at least a few months in order to establish a foundation. Less frequent sessions at the start might allow for some preliminary exploration, but risks frustration & prolonged or ineffective care. I usually like to start by sharing how our bodies & brains interact, and discovering what your body might be communicating.
